Upside Foods was one of the first to say: meat doesn’t need animals. They’ve built the world’s first large-scale cultivated meat facility in California — shifting cultivated meat from a moonshot to a market reality.
Rather than raising whole chickens, pigs, or cows, UPSIDE Foods grows only the meat we want to eat, directly from animal cells.
Synthesis has worked closely with UPSIDE Foods since their Series B round in 2021.

Advancing technology to produce meat from animal cells that tastes great and is cost competitive is incredibly challenging. UPSIDE have pioneered many cost and sensory breakthroughs in the field, establishing the company as the global leader. With a solid technology platform and credible path to scale, the company has built the world’s first large-scale factory in California and is preparing for commercial roll-out of its products.
How Synthesis engaged:
Since Synthesis's investment, UPSIDE has successfully built out their production facility and advanced their core technology, gaining regulatory approval for their first product. Alongside this, we worked with UPSIDE to strengthen their R&D and commercialisation strategy. We’re proud to back Uma and the UPSIDE team as they revolutionize meat production.
